I grew up with all the illegal real books in my house. I was told some crazy story about jazz musicians trading them in paper bags in alleys, which I guess turns out to be true. Some Berklee kids, in all their glorious copyright infringement, put together arguably the best collection of jazz tunes the world has ever known. Luckily Hal Leonard got involved and made the whole thing legit - giving not only credit to the musicians that wrote the tunes, but also getting edits from them, making the real books even more musically accurate. Now you can buy them at Barnes & Noble and start shedding - totally legally.
