The first time I heard this song, I found myself getting continuously surprised by the chord choices. In the first couple measures of the intro, the ears assume that the song is in the key of Gb. It isn't until the last chord of the intro that your ears are thrown for a loop and you have no idea where you are with the arrival of the g-natural on the Eb chord. It turns out that what felt like the I chord was actually the IV chord. This continues in every section of the song, descending always from the IV chord, which is a pretty nice (and not too rare) tool in songwriting, but they always are hitting us with more surprises.
The 2nd measure of the verse surprised me yet again. I was expecting, like the intro, for the IV chord to keep descending with the same line cliche as before, but after the first 2 recognizable chords, they hit us with a F-7 Bb-7 (III-7 VI-7). It's an incredibly cool progression that I've definitely never heard before.
