Ever since Laufey's breakout hit "From the Start," I've been very curious to see where she would go stylistically. "From the Start" blew the minds of all the kids who had never heard Bossa Nova before. For those of us who grew up studying Bossa Nova (or listening to it), it was kind of funny to watch. It reminded me of that movie where no one had remembered the Beatles and that kid could blow everyone's mind by rewriting all their songs.
On March 6th, Laufey put out a single called "Goddess" that followed the trend, sort of. Goddess has a jazzy feel in the way that she approaches the vocals as well as the chord changes. There's really no sign of Bossa here, but it definitely fits into the "jazz-lite" category as far as I can tell.
The most interesting thing about this song is how she approaches it rhythmically. Check out the piano tutorial and free sheet music below to learn how to play Goddess on the piano!

"Goddess" by Laufey is in 12/8. This means 12 beats per measure and the 8th note gets the beat. The song opens with her playing in what feels like a really slow 4/4. Only the melody suggests the subdivision that points to the fact that it's actually in 12/8. This becomes clear once she hits the B section, and plays the 8ths notes in the accompaniment that make the time signature much more obvious. In the interlude following the B section, she ramps it up another notch, transitioning into a "double-time" feel - using 16th notes in the accompaniment. In the piano tutorial video above, we go over how to practice these different sections so that you can really nail those different accompaniment patterns.
"Goddess" by Laufey is in a loose ABABB form:
A Section (slow 4/4 feel)
It always goes like this
Could've predicted it
I'm so naive to think you loved me for me
Kissed as I ran off stage
Too old to play this game
Guess you're still growing up at thirty
Oh
B Section (12/8 feel with 8th notes in accompaniment)
Were you surprised by me
When you took me home?
When the glamor wore off
Reduced to skin and bone
I can't even tell
Who you want to know
I'm a goddess on stage
Human when we're alone
Instrumental Interlude (double time feel - 16th notes)
A Section (continued 16th note pattern)
You took a star to bed
Woke up with me instead
You must have felt so damn deceived
When you made up a version of
Me that you thought you'd love
But I am not your Aphrodite
Oh
B Section (continuing the 16th note double time feel)
Were you surprised by me
When you took me home?
When the glamor wore off
Reduced to skin and bone
I can't even tell
Who you want to know
I'm a goddess on stage
Human when we're alone
Instrumental Interlude (16th note pattern)
B Section (Rock feel / different lyrics)
You took me for a fool
You stole my youth
You wanted this so much
You watched me rise
Then killed my light
And now you know
I'm not your f***ing goddess
Oh___
I'm no goddess when I'm alone
